WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF WORDS

I’ve always loved words.
Words skipped into my ears
packed with pictures, blooming colors
growing a garden in my mind.

I didn’t always love
READING.
D-e-c-o-d-i-n-g
w-o-r-d-s
o-n a p-a-g-e w-a-s
F-R-U-S-T-R-A-T-I-N-G

understanding
was a struggle, a puzzle,
a maze that left me lost
in a hopeless haze.

But with gentle nudges
from my parents
from teachers who cared enough
to share their time
and their patience
I didn’t give up.

Some days
were like wading
during low tide.
Sometimes
I wanted to hide.

I got tired of treading water
and getting no where

until one day
I dove in and
cracked the CODE
swimming on
into reading mode.
